Many people have accepted the narrative that there is a conflict between science and faith. Professor Barr will show that this narrative is based on misunderstandings of Christian belief, an outdated view of scientific history and a skewed interpretation of what science has actually discovered about the universe and about human beings. After clarifying some key theological ideas, he will tell the story of the relationship between Christianity and science, including some dramatic facts that are relatively little known. He will then discuss some of the discoveries of modern physics that are more in line with traditional Christian beliefs than with atheism and materialism.
Dr. Barr is President of the Society of Catholic Scientists and Professor Emeritus of theoretical particle physics at the University of Delaware. In 2010 he was elected to the Academy of Catholic Theology and was awarded the Benemerenti Medal by Pope Benedict XVI.
