Volunteer Opportunities

St. John’s Soup Kitchen

Food Pantry Volunteers

IHM has been assigned a monthly opportunity to serve the homeless at St. John's Soup Kitchen in Newark. Our assigned slot is the first Tuesday of every month for the next 12 months beginning January 7th, 2025. The dates in 2025 are scheduled:

January 7, February 4, March 4, April 1, May 6, June 3, July 1, August 5, September 2, October 7, November 4, December 2

We will need 5 volunteers for each date. We will arrange to leave from the Nazareth Center at 9:30 AM and return 1:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to help those in need. These events involve plating and serving lunches to over 250 men. Please let us know if you are available to help by checking-in below or call our office at 908-889-2100 if you need help. Thank you!

Thank you for taking an interest in helping our Food Pantry!

The best way you can help is by gathering food items from your home, friends, neighbors or co-workers and bringing the food to our donation crate behind the church. Check out our website for a listing of acceptable food items and details about the pantry.

We're open on Wednesdays from 10-11:30 am. If that interferes with school, we are open every second Sunday of the month from 10-11:30am.

Thank you!

IHM GARDEN

To all gardeners current and future volunteers, your time is needed for this year’s garden. Looking for volunteers. No experience needed. For help at the garden some time during the week of this growing season. Some of the things that need to be done on a weekly basis is weeding, fertilizing, spraying for pests (insects and squirrels) plus overall maintenance. The existing vegetable beds are in the process of being replaced before the planting season begins in a couple of months. See the planting diagram and planting schedule below to visualize our plan. We hope to see you soon!

Livestream TEAM

We need volunteers to help livestream daily Mass at 8:30 AM. Typically Mass lasts between 25-35 minutes. No technical background required. We will teach you everything we know. Documents with details on the steps and hands-on training will be provided. Role requires operating the camera while attending Mass. There is no long term commitment. If you cannot come to the same Mass each week we can still benefit from your assistance. This will be great experience for up and coming film students or seniors wishing to expand their technical knowledge. Please contact Rick if you’d like to help.

Care & Support

This is a collaboration between IHM and St. Batholomew. Providing Compassionate Support & Assistance to those in need in the Scotch Plains & Fanwood area. Our Ministry is not intended to act or replace Primary Care Providers but to supplement existing support mechanisms. We will also collaborate with family members and other local support organizations.

1.Please contact the offices of either parish. The time commitment and nature of activities you would like to be involved in will be tailored to your availability and preferences.

2.You will need to attend a 2-hour training course on protecting vulnerable adults and be subject to a background check including driving record, if needed.
