Archdiocese of Newark Lenten Regulations 2023

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK 2023 LENTEN REGULATIONS

March 17, 2023

In observance of Lent 2023, the following obligations are to be observed by all Catholics of the Archdiocese of Newark who enjoy the blessings of good health:

+The days of both Fast and Abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.

+The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

+Fasting in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one (1) full meal and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity.

+The obligation of Fast applies to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59.

+On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. The obligation of Abstinence applies to Catholics who have reached the age of 14.

+The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

+The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

+The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, Feb. 26, to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, Jun. 4, 2023.

+Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

+The Memorial of St. Patrick is on a Friday this year. For those members of the faithful celebrating this Solemnity and who desire it, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R. has dispensed the penitential obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 17. A substitution should be made in the form of fasting, prayer and/or almsgiving.

EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FOR SYRIA & TURKEY

EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FOR SYRIA & TURKEY

February 6, 2023

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated large areas of central Turkey and northwest Syria. The death toll has surpassed 17,000 and continues to climb. We continue to witness via news reports the horrible loss of life and damage in Turkey and Syria, and we stand in solidarity and prayer with our brothers and sisters there. Catholic aid agencies have launched emergency collections for quake victims. Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Church, is already on the ground offering emergency relief efforts led by local partners with Caritas Turkey, Caritas Syria in Aleppo and Lattakia, and others. They are bringing displaced people to safe spaces and distributing hot meals, clean water, hygiene supplies, and other essentials. They are collecting donations. If you wish to help in these efforts or make a donation, please visit crs.org. Along with financial support, prayer remains essential. Let us continue to offer our prayers to our brothers and sisters who mourn losses and face this devastation.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE/SENIOR BRUNCH & BINGO

MLK DAY OF SERVICE/SENIOR BRUNCH & BINGO

January 16, 2023

MLK Day of Service was a huge success at IHM today, so grateful to the army of volunteers that came to help out. In collaboration with Rev Suzanne Gates and All Saints Episcopal Church and Hope with Housing, Fr Mike welcomed 95+ area seniors to a soup and sandwich brunch and bingo. We also had over 105 boxed lunches delivered to Plainfield and Springfield Seniors by an army of drivers. We had a collection for food for the food pantry and pet supplies. We hosted multiple girl scout troupes who collected books and first aid supplies and made inspirational book markers. Special thanks to the leadership team at MLK SPF that make this possible every year.

Living Nativity 2022

Living Nativity 2022

December 18, 2022

Thank you to the IHM Youth Ministry gang for gathering at our Christmas Celebration. Teens dressed up like shepherds and angels. Hanging out with a bunch of gnarly farm animals in the freezing cold. The live show was the perfect complement to the Memorial Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. It brought a lot of smiles to many parishioners and kids, so it was worth it. HUGE thanks to everyone involved in this year’s living nativity!
